NIE Number 2

In Spain, all Spanish citizens over 14 years old are issued with a National Identity Document (Spanish: Documento Nacional de Identidad (DNI)), with a unique number, in the format 00000000-A (where 0 is a digit and A is a checksum letter). Foreign nationals are issued with a similar identity card, with a number in the format X-0000000-A (again, 0 is a digit, A is a checksum letter, X is a letter, generally X, and lately also Y), called an NIE Number (Número de Identificación de Extranjeros, Foreigner’s Identity Number). The numbers are used as identification for almost all purposes. This is required for all transactions related with tax authority.
